Russian rescue workers have removed over 86,000 metric tons of contaminated sand and soil following a Black Sea oil spill from two storm-hit, aging tankers on December 15. The spill affected beaches near Anapa and Crimea, killing wildlife and causing environmental damage. Over 10,000 workers are cleaning the area. Approximately 2,400 metric tons of heavy M100-grade fuel oil, which sinks in water, spilled, less than initially feared. The cleanup continues under government supervision. n18oc_crux
