Key Concepts
1. What are Decimals?
-
Decimals are numbers with a dot (.) called the decimal point.
-
They help express values less than one (like 0.1, 0.5) and combine whole numbers with fractions.
Example:
-
3.4 means 3 wholes and 4 tenths →
2. Place Value in Decimals
| Place Value | Example: 45.678 |
|---|---|
| Tens | 4 |
| Ones | 5 |
| Decimal Point (.) | Separates whole and decimal parts |
| Tenths | 6 |
| Hundredths | 7 |
| Thousandths | 8 |
Read as:
45.678 = 45 + + +
3. Conversion Between Fractions and Decimals
| Fraction | Decimal |
|---|---|
| 0.1 | |
| 0.5 | |
| 0.75 | |
| 0.02 |
Tip: Divide numerator by denominator to get the decimal.
4. Comparing Decimals
-
Start comparing from the left (whole part).
-
If whole parts are equal, compare tenths, then hundredths, etc.
Examples:
-
3.4 < 3.5
-
2.35 > 2.09
5. Like and Unlike Decimals
-
Like Decimals: Same number of digits after the decimal (e.g., 2.50 and 3.75)
-
Unlike Decimals: Different digits after the decimal (e.g., 1.5 and 2.35)
Convert unlike decimals into like decimals for easier comparison:
-
1.5 → 1.50, now compare with 2.35
6. Addition of Decimals
-
Write the numbers in columns, aligning the decimal points.
-
Add like whole numbers and place the decimal point in the answer.
Write the numbers in columns, aligning the decimal points.
Add like whole numbers and place the decimal point in the answer.
7. Subtraction of Decimals
-
Align the decimal points just like addition.
-
Subtract as usual.
8. Using Decimals in Real Life
Money:
-
₹5.75 means 5 rupees and 75 paise
-

-
1.25 m = 1 m + 25 cm
Weight:
-
1 kg = 1000 g
-
2.5 kg = 2 kg + 500 g
Practice Questions
-
